The Princess Elizabeth Hospital (PEH) is the primary and only acute care hospital serving the Bailiwick of Guernsey, providing essential medical services to the island's residents and visitors. Located in the parish of Saint Martin at Rue Mignot, it operates under the States of Guernsey and features a comprehensive emergency department, making it a central hub for healthcare in the region.
The hospital was officially opened on June 23, 1949, by the then-Princess Elizabeth (later Queen Elizabeth II) during her visit to Guernsey with Prince Philip.
This marked a significant milestone in the island's healthcare development, as PEH consolidated diagnostic facilities and acute medical wards into one location. Over the decades, it has expanded to meet growing needs, celebrating its 70th anniversary in 2019 with community events, including calls for historical photos from the public. By 2018, the hospital's bed occupancy had surpassed 95%, highlighting capacity strains and prompting discussions on modernization, as parts of the facility are seen as outdated after over 70 years of service.
Situated at Rue Mignot in Saint Martin (coordinates: 49°26′51″N 2°33′30″W), PEH spans multiple levels and includes 12 wards with a total of 104 beds.
The site features accessible entrances, disabled parking, and wheelchair assistance at the Porters Lodge. Visitor amenities include the Gloucester Room canteen on Level 2, offering meals and snacks from 7:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m., along with vending machines throughout the building. The hospital also hosts an art collection by local Guernsey artists, focusing on island themes like landscapes and history, enhancing the environment for patients and staff. Recent additions include the Lighthouse Wards, three identical buildings for specialized care.
PEH delivers a wide range of acute medical services, including consultations and treatments through the Medical Specialist Group (MSG), which covers fields such as medicine, surgery (including ophthalmology), anaesthetics, paediatrics, obstetrics, and gynaecology. Patients are typically referred by doctors, with options for private medical cover. Inpatient care includes physiotherapy via the Guernsey Therapy Group, nursing support, and specialized meal options for dietary needs. The hospital participates in Guernsey's Specialist Health Insurance Scheme, covering residents of Guernsey, Alderney, Herm, and Jethou for consultations, treatments, and procedures (with exclusions like cosmetic surgery or dentistry).
